If you’re planning a shark diving experience in Cancun and have questions, you’re in the right place. Here are the answers to everything guests ask us before booking.
Do I need a scuba diving certification to swim with sharks in Cancun?
No certification is required. Our shark encounter is a snorkeling experience — you stay at the surface with a mask, fins, and wetsuit provided. No scuba equipment, no dive training, no certification. If you can swim, you can do this tour.
Is shark diving in Cancun safe?
Yes, when done with a professional operator. Our guides are certified Emergency First Responders with years of in-water experience alongside silky sharks. They enter the water first, remain in the water throughout the encounter, and exit last. Every guest receives a full safety and behavior briefing before entering the water. We have a 95% encounter success rate and an unbroken safety record across more than 100 trips per year.
Is there cage diving in Cancun?
No — and that is intentional. Our shark encounter is open-water snorkeling with free-swimming silky sharks, not cage diving. There is no cage involved. You are in the water alongside the sharks, supervised at all times by professional guides. This is a more natural, immersive experience than cage diving and is the format used by the most respected shark diving operations in the world.
What kind of sharks will I see in Cancun?
Silky sharks (Carcharhinus falciformis) — the resident apex predator of the open Caribbean water off the northern Yucatán Peninsula. We do not operate whale shark tours or bull shark diving. Our operation is exclusively focused on silky sharks, which are present in these waters year-round. Typically between 2 and 8 sharks are encountered per trip, ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 meters in length.
Is shark diving in Cancun available year-round?
Yes. Silky sharks are not a seasonal species in this region — they are permanent residents of the open water beyond the reef. Unlike whale shark tours which only operate from June to September, or bull shark diving in Playa del Carmen which runs November to February, our silky shark tours run every month of the year. There is no bad season.
How much does the shark diving tour cost in Cancun?
Our private charter is $1,299 USD for your group. This covers the full experience — snorkeling gear for all guests, certified bilingual guides, professional underwater photos of your encounter, safety equipment, and the private vessel. There is no per-person pricing. The charter is yours exclusively, with no shared groups. Additional video packages are available on request.
Where does the shark diving tour depart from?
We depart from both Cancun and Isla Mujeres. If you are staying in the Cancun Hotel Zone or anywhere along the main strip, the Cancun departure is most convenient. If you are based on Isla Mujeres, we depart directly from the island. Contact us via WhatsApp and we will confirm the exact marina location and meeting time based on your accommodation.
How long is the shark diving experience?
Plan for a half-day. The boat ride to the shark site is approximately 30 to 40 minutes each way. Time in the water with the sharks is typically 30 to 60 minutes depending on conditions and shark activity. Total trip time from marina to return is usually 3 to 4 hours including the briefing.
What should I bring on the shark diving tour?
Swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and a waterproof camera or GoPro if you have one. We provide all snorkeling equipment. Avoid bright or reflective accessories in the water. Eat a light meal beforehand — a full stomach and open-ocean swells do not always mix well.
What is the minimum age for the shark tour?
The minimum age is 10 years old. All guests must be able to swim unassisted in open water. There is no maximum age restriction. We have had guests in their seventies complete the experience without issue. What matters is comfort in open water, not age.
What is the cancellation policy?
30% cancellation fee for cancellations made at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure. If sea conditions make the trip unsafe on the day, we will reschedule or refund in full. No refund for cancellations made within 48 hours of departure.
How do I book the Cancun shark diving tour?
Contact us directly via WhatsApp — it is the fastest way to confirm availability and get your date secured. We do not use a third-party booking platform for this experience. Direct booking means you deal with the actual guides, not an intermediary, and any questions before or after the trip are answered by the team that will be on the boat with you.
Still have a question not answered here? Message us on WhatsApp and we will get back to you the same day.
